Singer Island, Florida Real Estate History

Singer Island was originally names Inlet City in 1906 and later renamed after Paris Singer, the famous Palm Beach developer and son of sewing machine millionaire Issaac Singer. Paris Singer began building a hotel on the south end of the Island and called it the “Blue Heron”.

However, the collapse of the real estate market, compounded by the 1928 hurricane that destroyed the Sherman Pointe bridge connecting Palm Beach and Singer Island, caused Singer’s project to be abandoned. The Hilton Hotel currently stands where the “Blue Heron’ was razed in 1940.

In 1949 the wooden Sherman’s Point Bridge was replaced with a steel and concrete drawbridge, permitting vessels through the Intracoastal Waterway. In 1947 A. 0. Edwards, the railroad tycoon, purchased 240 acres on Singer Island for $240,000 and laid out a city plan for parks, walkways, and roadways totaling $500,000 in improvements . His estate, including the Colonnades Hotel, sold to John D. MacArthur in 1963, shortly after his death. The 1950’s saw tremendous growth on Singer Island with many Hotels, and condominiums opening up as winter residents.

John D. MacArthur donated a large section of land on the north end of Singer Island for a state park. John D. MacArthur Beach State Park opened in 1989 and today features almost two miles of picturesque beach snorkeling and scuba diving hiking and biking trails mangrove forests and other natural wonders for the eco-adventurer. Nestled on the barrier island the park also sits in the urban estuary of Lake Worth Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway, you can kayak, canoe, and hike short trails and visit the Nature Center. . In 1990 the Colonnades Hotel as raised, and construction began on what is now the Marriot Ocean Pointe Resort.

Today Singer Island is home to many luxury high-end condominiums such as the Ritz Carlton, Via Delfino and One Singer to name a few. In August of 2014 Professional golfer Rory Mcllroy paid 2 million cash for 3,100 square foot a luxury condominium at 5050 N. Ocean Drive in the building called Oceans Edge.

In 2011 Larry Pettit listed and sold the Penthouse unit at One Singer Island for over 3 million. This was the highest sale of that year on Singer Island. This luxury penthouse was featured in the Wall Street Journal as the House of the Day.
